Abstract
İn this retrospective study tve evaluated ciprofloxacin resistance in Escherichia coli isolated from urine cultures (January 2004 through December 2004). İn microbiologic Identification and susceptibility testing we used Standard culture metodes and NCCLS guideline. From 231 E. coli isolated from urine cultures, 51 isolates (22.7%) were found to be resistant against ciprofloxacin. Ciprofloxacin is an expanded spectrum quinolone that is used frequently in the treatment of urinary tract infections caused by gram-negative bacilli such as E. coli. İn recent years there is an increasing reports of ciprofloxacin resistance in United States of America, Europe and in our country. E. coli is one of the most frequent causative agents in community and hospital acquired infections, because of this ciprofloxacin susceptibility testing should be performed routinely in isolated E. coli in order to correct and effective antimicrobial use in clinical setting.
